History of St. John's Breakfast with Santa

 Every December, the St. John the Evangelist community kicks off the Christmas season in earnest with a special visit from Santa Claus himself. Breakfast with Santa is a long-standing tradition in our parish which allows parents and children alike to share the wonder and joy of the season. The original Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, was a 4th century bishop of Myra in present-day Turkey who was famous for his generosity to those in need. Over time, he was transformed into Santa Claus, a jolly figure who brings gifts to good little boys and girls and reminds us all of our joy at the birth of the Baby Jesus. Instead of traipsing to a crowded shopping mall and standing in a line of harassed parents and children rehearsing their lists of Christmas wishes, Breakfast with Santa allows families to break bread together (actually, to pass plates of eggs, french toast, and sausage) before magically summoning our visitor from the North Pole with chants of "Santa, Santa, Santa". Those chants rise to shrieks of delight as Santa makes an entrance that would be envied by the biggest rock star. Families line up, admire one another’s children, and exchange greetings as they wait for their turn to place their little ones on the great man's lap.  Photographs are available and everyone basks in the excitement of the children and warm community spirit.
